Golden Foundation Residency Pt. 2
Sharing a Golden Opportunity
Part 2 of 2
(see the previous post for Part 1)
.
I recently returned from the 4-week residency at Golden Artist Colors in New Berlin, NY.
It was truly an immersive opportunity.
.
.
The dedicated organization around the Sam and Adele Golden Foundation and The Golden Artist Colors is a family experience.
.
.
Barbara, Mark and their daughter, Emma, were gracious hosts. There is a genuine love of what they are doing. From the top down, everyone was so positive and welcoming.
.
This residency provided an opportunity for three artists. Robin Tewes from New York City and Ella Amitay Sadovsky from Israel were my residency mates; both had impressive art backgrounds and inspiring work.
We lived in the beautifully renovated Golden Foundation barn where the large private studios were upstairs and our living quarters downstairs. It was an experience that allowed you to get to know your fellow residents and the Golden Artists Colors team very well.

.
Robin Tewes (http://www.neoimages.net/artistportfolio.aspx?pid=3162) is a mainstay in the New York art scene, building on her past as one of the infamous Guerilla Girls, an anonymous collective of artist-activists promoting gender and racial equality. Their activist posters and performances brought to the surface the issues of male dominance in the New York art scene back in the 1980’s and are still targeting inequities today. Her paintings of ironic figurative dramas were very engaging, and I enjoyed talking with her about her thoughts on painting and art.
Ella Amitay Sadovsky (http://www.amitaysadovsky.com/news.html) is one of Israel’s hottest painters. She started out as a scientist, receiving her Doctorate at The Weizman Institute of Science in Israel. A serious bicycle accident (which laid her up for six months) allowed her to reexamine her life’s path, and she switched directions toward art. Her highly decorative paintings reveal a strength of vision and personal view of her world that I found compelling.
.
I was the only resident with a car and our explorations to local surrounding towns to get groceries and supplies were fun excursions. One outing, which was intended to be a quick grocery trip turned into a 3-hour shoe-buying spectacle that became a running joke throughout our time together.
.
It was an honor to spend four weeks with these two inspiring artists.
.
I can’t say enough about the studio experience. I explored colors that I hadn’t used in years, worked in a new modular panel technique that allowed me to explore more openly the relationship between objective and non-objective imagery.
.
.
My responsibility was to paint, just paint, for four weeks! The Golden Foundation supplied all the paint and technical information I could ever want. It was truly an eye-opening and stimulating experience.
.
Now back in my studio, I’m assessing my decisions and putting final touches on work started in rural New York. Will share some of this work in future posts.
