Start where you are.

I recently decided to take a break from making documentaries. I’m returning to the studio to continue work I started with artists’ books before I was so rudely interrupted by a new passion:) I miss working with tools and materials … and listening to music in the studio. I also seem to get an itch for change every 10-15 years.

Do what you can.

In preparation, I took a workshop in small metals this summer at Penland School of Crafts. My first experience there was in the summer of 1976. This was my ninth session since that time, and each workshop has been a strong influence on the direction of my art. I worked with an experienced and talented group of artists led by the extraordinary Anna Johnson. (check out her stunning work) The plan was to learn the basics of small metal construction (casting, soldering, and fabrication) to gain additional control over the design and function of my sculptural books; hinges, closures, etc

Use what you have.

I’m practicing my new soldering and fabrication skills on a body of work in wearable art made from vintage copper etching plates collected over the years. In fact, I’ve been collecting bits of metal, glass, rock, beads, paint chips, broken china, found mostly in flea markets and well-worn footpaths since the late 70’s… I wasn’t sure why I was collecting; it was just a continuing interest. The path reveals itself.

The start of a new direction in the studio is full of possibilities; playing what if, and the requisite mistakes that change up the path. I love having a creative problem to think about when I wake up in the middle of the night.
