THE OTHER BROTHER: THE ART OF JESSE & TOM FLOWERS AT THE FINE ARTS CENTER

The Fine Arts Center is pleased to start off their 2015/16-exhibition schedule with an important visual tribute to the family story of a notable Greenville, SC artist, and the brother he never knew. Following a successful Kickstarter project for The Other Brother documentary in 2014, Asheville, NC artists, Mark Flowers and Kristy Higby of Mountain Tea Studios, have curated an exhibition of original artwork by the two brothers. The brothers are Mark’s father, Tom Flowers, and Jesse Flowers, the uncle he never met. The exhibition will run from August 18 until September 25, 2015 in the Sheffield Wood Gallery of the Fine Arts Center.

The inaugural art exhibition and the Greenville premier of the documentary will both happen at The Fine Arts Center on September 3rd. The Artists’ Reception will be from 6-7:00pm in the Sheffield Wood Gallery in the Fine Arts Center. Following the reception, The Other Brother Documentary will screen at 7:00pm in the Ann W. Sutherlin Recital Hall. Afterwards, there will be a Q&A period with Kristy Higby, the documentary filmmaker and Tom Flowers.

Tom Flowers, now 87, is a retired Faculty Emeritus of Art at Furman University. He taught there for 30 years and remains an active professional artist in the Southeast. Jesse Flowers passed away in 2004 after living a reclusive life near Fredericksburg, VA.

“It became clear from viewer feedback about the documentary that this project needed to have a Part II in the form of an art exhibition.” says Kristy Higby, the film’s creator who spent eight years creating the documentary. One of her other works is Bowl Digger, a short documentary about Maxie Eades, a retired mill worker-turned wooden bowl-maker from Dacusville, SC in Pickens County who was recently named “A South Carolina Treasure”.

This program is funded in part by the Metropolitan Arts Council, which receives support from the City of Greenville, BMW Manufacturing Company, Michelin North America, Inc., SEW Eurodrive and the South Carolina Arts Commission. This project is also funded through the generous support of the Fine Arts Center’s Foundation and Fine Arts Partners organization.

We hope you can join us for the Premier Screening Art Exhibition TOB for The Other Brother on September 3, 2015.

A printed book (hard or softbound) is available for purchase via the Blurb website that focuses on Jesse and Tom’s artwork. The book is full color, 24 pages, and 40 artworks.
